Biography

John’s connection with the 28th State Senate District begins with his birth at the former South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach. John’s parents are both aerospace veterans, emigrating to the South Bay from New York City in the mid-1960’s and settling in Redondo Beach just prior to John’s arrival. John’s ancestors all immigrated to the United States after 1885, and include Filipino, German, Italian and English immigrants.

Being inspired throughout his childhood by the South Bay’s commitment to both a strong economy and a strong national defense, John graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering. John chose to serve as an officer in the Surface Navy. His first sea tour, USS Ainsworth (FFT-1090), was home ported in Staten Island, NY, where his uncle, Anthony Gaeta, had been Borough President for over 12 years. The weekend John reported for duty in February 1993, John watched from a friend’s apartment on the other side of the Hudson River as terrorists struck the World Trade Center for the first time.

After a second sea tour onboard the USS Ponce (LPD-15) in Norfolk, VA, John served as Officer-in-Charge of Military Police at Naval Air Facility El Centro, less than 7 miles from the California-Mexico border. Among other regular police duties, John’s department was constantly patrolling the facility bombing ranges to keep illegal immigrants and drug traffickers from crossing through, often arriving too late as unexploded ordinance & dehydration claimed lives of those that failed to heed the warning signs. This experience had a significant impact on John’s understanding of illegal immigration and drug trafficking. During his 11-year naval career, John earned numerous awards and citations, including two (2) Navy Achievement Medals, Joint Meritorious Service Award, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and Expert Medals in both Rifle & Pistol.

John continues to serve the U.S. Navy as a Blue and Gold Officer of the Naval Academy for multiple high schools in the South Bay, including South Torrance High School, Narbonne High School, California Academy of Math & Science, Rolling Hills Prep, and San Pedro High School.

Since returning to Southern California in 2002, John has enjoyed a 6-½ year aerospace career that included steady promotion opportunities, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Regis University, and a Professional Certification in Government Contracts Management from UCLA. John has been employed by TRW, Northrop Grumman, and currently works for Raytheon Technical Services Company in El Segundo. In his current role, John manages a team of a dozen subcontracts managers throughout the country responsible for supply chain activities on various government programs. John also volunteers time as a Dale Carnegie Instructor for courses taught throughout the South Bay, including El Segundo and Long Beach.

In 2006, John was elected as a Board Member of the Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council for the City of Los Angeles.  He was made Chairman of the Fireworks Reduction Task Force, credited with significantly reducing the level of fireworks activity in the weeks before and after the July 4th weekend in San Pedro to virtually non-existent. John also served on the Land Use & Planning Committee, responsible for reviewing all conditional land use permits for the Northwest San Pedro area, and the Communications & Outreach committee.

Since age 15, John has been an active volunteer for the Republican Party, working with his mother and the Republican Women’s Federated at citizen ceremony voter registration tables. In 2006, John was elected to the Los Angeles County Republican Party Central Committee, and reelected in 2008. John was elected Chairman of his local Assembly District Central Committee both terms, and has quickly established himself as a free-thinker willing to talk to and sometimes even support candidates of other parties when their principles and values align with his own. A key example is after serving as the Victory ’06 South Bay Chairman for Governor Schwarzeneggar’s re-election, John worked for Democrat Richard Vladovic’s campaign for LAUSD Board in 2007.

In 2009, John worked with citywide Democratic activists throughout Los Angeles to defeat Measure B, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s attempt to double the average energy bill of every city resident and transfer significant city labor from their assigned unions to the IBEW. John led campaign precinct operations for the No on Measure B committee, working with the Laborers Local 802 & 832, as well as numerous neighborhood council activists, to defeat Measure B. For his efforts, John was subsequently appointed to the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power Advocacy Committee as the lead liaison for the 15th Council District.

John and his wife Andrea were married in 2002. They have two daughters and reside in San Pedro, CA. John and Andrea attend Holy Trinity Catholic Church in San Pedro, and John’s 5 year-old daughter, AnneMarie, has already performed in the San Pedro Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” for two consecutive seasons.
